Director

M.S., PhD (University of California, Berkeley, USA) is Associate Professor specialising on environment and health issues at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Visiting Professor at the Master’s Program on Toxicology and Environmental Risk at the Medical School of the University of Pavia and senior scientist at the Chemical Assessment and Testing unit of the Institute for Health and Consumer Protection at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (currently on leave). At the European Commission he has served as Scientific Coordinator of the IHCP, Action Leader for Consumer Product Safety and Quality and Community Reference Laboratory for Food Contact Materials, Action Leader for Human Exposure to Environmental Stressors and Health Effects and for Assessment of Chemicals at the European Chemicals Bureau, Scientific Assistant to the JRC Director General, Strategy Manager of the IHCP and as science advisor to the Greek Minister of the Environment. He was a principal contributor to the REACH Regulation and to the Environment and Health Action Plan and is currently member of the Health and Environment Working Party and of the Health Security Committee. He has been pioneering efforts to coupling biology-based modelling with toxicogenomics discovery systems for developing a mechanistically based understanding of the health risk of environmental chemical mixtures. He is member of the international forum for evidence-based toxicology, of the scientific committee for chronic risks of INERIS, and secretary-general of MESAEP. He has contributed to the IPs HEIMTSA, 2-FUN, NO MIRACLE, HENVINET and, CAIR4HEALTH, HEREPLUS, TRANSPHORM, GENESIS, TAGS and INTERA.

Alberto Gotti

Senior Researcher

Dr A Gotti is a Physicist of the University of Milan with long experience in environment and health impact assessment, data assimilation and exposure modelling including physiology-based biokinetic modelling. He has 20 years of research experience; in the last ten years he has worked for the European Commission‟s Joint Research Centre (6 years), for the Intedisciplinary Institute of Environmental Research in Athens (2 years) and for CERTH (2 years) in the frame of the projects INTARESE, SMAQ, HEIMTSA, 2-FUN, HEREPLUS, TAGS, INTERA.

Spyros Karakitsios

Head of Exposure Biology Unit

Dr Spyros Karakitsios is an environmental health scientist, with studies in physics (degree), environmental and computational chemistry (M.Sc.) and applied biology (PhD) of the University of Ioannina. He has worked 3 years at the European Commission Joint Research Centre (Institute for Health and Consumer Protection) with an overall 10 years of experience in environmental/atmospheric process modelling and 4 years of experience in advanced human exposure science, health impact assessment of environmental stressors and neural computation. He is also breaking new ground in biologically-based models for human risk assessment. He has contributed to the large-scale European integrated projects HEIMTSA, 2-FUN, HEREPLUS, TRANSPHORM,URGENCHE, TAGS and INTERA. Since early 2011, he is scientific collaborator in EnvE-Lab.

Ioannis Zarkadas

Senior Scientist

Dr. Ioannis Zarkadas is an Environmental scientist with studies at the University of Wales (BSc), University of Wolverhampton (MSc), University of Leeds (MEng) and University of Ioannina (PhD). He specialises in waste management and chemical analysis for solid and liquid wastes and has solid experience in the scientific and technical matters of anaerobic digestion and composting of heterogeneous substrates including manures, the organic fraction of the municipal solid wastes, energy crops and slaughterhouse wastes. For the biological waste management processes, he uses a logical approach considering these as living organisms which present limitations that can only be overcome with proper management and understanding of the limits and interactions within the microbial communities.

Evangelos Handakas

PhD Student Researcher

Evangelos Handakas is a PhD candidate in the Environmental Engineering Laboratory of the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). He is also a student in the master program of the Mathematics School in AUTH, with specialization in “Statistics and Modeling”.  He has a diploma in Chemical Engineering and in Civil Infrastructure Engineering.  Moreover, he has a M.Sc. degree in “Construction Management”.  His main research interests are in the field of computational modeling with an emphasis on biology systems. Furthermore, he has conducted scientific activities in the domain of solid waste management.

Marianthi Kermenidou

PhD Student Researcher

Marianthi Kermeniou is a Phd student of the Environmental Laboratory, Department of Chemical Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Her scientific field is the Indoor air pollution, especially the mass concentration, chemical analysis, source apportionment and redox activity of airborne particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM10).

Krystalia Papadaki

PhD Student Researcher

Krystalia Papadaki is a PhD candidate at the Environmental Engineering Laboratory. She holds a diploma in Chemical Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Her research activities focus on the development and application of Quantitative Structure Activity Relationships (QSARs) for the prediction of physicochemical and biochemical determinants of ADME processes. She has been involved in INTEGRA, TRANSPHORM, CROME, HEALS, CheRRIE and PEC projects.

Dimitris Chapizanis

PhD Student Researcher

Dimitris is a PhD candidate at the Environmental Engineering Laboratory. He holds a diploma in Chemical Engineering and his research activities focus on atmospheric pollution, exposure assessment and environmental risk. His current work involves the development of an agent based model that determines personal exposure based on time-geography and concentration data derived by sensor technologies. He has been involved in projects URGENCHE, TRANSPHORM, CROME and HEALS.

Dr. Ilias Frydas

Postdoctoral Researcher

Dr. Frydas Ilias is a molecular virologist who joined the Environmental Engineering Laboratory (EnvE Lab) in January 2017. After a year of study at the department of Physics, in 2004 he continued his studies at the department of Biology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and obtained a Diploma in Molecular Biology, Genetics and Biotechnology in November 2009. Since the summer of 2009, he started working as an assistant researcher in the 2nd Pediatrics Department of the University Hospital of Thessaloniki (AhePa), studying various inflammatory pathways based on microarray analysis. In January 2011 he joined the Laboratory of Virology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, in the University of Ghent, where he started his PhD on PRRS virus. In July 2015, he was awarded a PhD degree in Veterinary Virology. After completing his military service, he worked at Celixir pharmaceutical company, Greece. Currently, he is involved as a postdoctoral researcher at the HBM4EU and the BlueHealth European projects, where EnvE Lab is a major partner.

Evelin Matiaki MBA, MSc Civil Engineer is a European Projects Manager and a PhD Candidate at the Environmental Engineering Laboratory of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). She graduated from City University London and holds an MBA degree in Finance from University of Macedonia, GR and an MSc degree in Urban Development and Planning from University of Thessaly, GR. She has more than 10 years of experience in the implementation of EU funded projects in various organizations, Ministry of Competitiveness & Development – JTS Greece – Italy, Region of Thessaly, University of Western Macedonia other private organizations. Her main research interests focus on environmental pollution and sensoring.

Maria Andrielou

maria-andrielou

Communications Adviser

With more than 10 years of experience in the industry, policy and education field, Maria specializes in developing communication, dissemination and stakeholder engagement strategies for trade associations, public institutions, academia and SMEs. Her focus is on research and innovation related topics, such as environment and health, sustainability, safety, resource and energy efficiency, water management, circular economy and bioeconomy. Before joining the Environmental Engineering Laboratory (EnvE-Lab) in March 2016, she worked for 7 years as a Communications Counsellor for Research & Innovation topics at the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) in Brussels. Besides being involved in the communication and dissemination activities of numerous EU-funded projects, Maria managed communications and media relations for Cefic’s Long-Range Research Initiative (LRI) Programme and the European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry (SusChem ETP). Maria has studied linguistics and has an MA in Cross-Cultural Communication & International Relations from the University of Newcastle. She speaks Greek, English, Dutch, French and notions of Italian.

Marilena Lioti

Researcher

Marilena Lioti is a Chemical Engineer graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Her Masters degree (MSc) was on Management and Treatment of Water, Soil and Waste in the Grande Ecole AgroParisTech (Paris, France). She has completed her 6-month Internship in the National Body for Water Supply and Sewerage Systems of Thessaloniki S.A. (EYATh SA) and specifically, in the Laboratory of Sewerage and Environmental Control. Her current research interests pertain to the field of biomass valorization methods. She speaks Greek, English, French and she has basic knowledge of German.

Irini Furxhi

MSc Student

Irini Furxhi is a Medical Laboratory Scientist, with Msc in Toxicology. She has worked in “Etablissement Francais du Sang” (EFS) – France Compte in the diagnostic Molecular-Oncology laboratory, thus gaining experience in molecular technical methods such as DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, RTqPCR, Sanger sequencing, Chimerism, -omics, etc. She is now working in biologically-based pharmacokinetic models for assessment of public health risk from environmental toxicant. She has also contributed in several EnvE-Lab reports.

Anastasia Tsocha

MSc Student

Anastasia Tsocha holds a degree in chemistry from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and an Msc in toxicology from the University of Thessaly. She is now working in the assessment of cytotoxic effects of particulate matter samples, at the Environmental Engineering Laboratory.   She has worked as a chemist analyst in the Quality Control Laboratory of ‘’Hellas- Gold’’ mining company in Stratoni, Halkidiki.  She has experience in cell culture, spectroscopy and analytical technics. She is a registered member of the Association of Greek Chemists and Hellenic Society of Toxicology.

Nafsika Papaioannou

Undergraduate student

Nafsika’s expertise lies in metabolic engineering and bioinformatics. She has research experience in metabolomics of biological fluid with two technical approaches, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS). In addition, she is working on data processing and pathway analysis of NMR and MS metabolomics.
