The Environmental Engineering Laboratory in cooperation with the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) are hosting the Third Plenary Conference for Industrially Contaminated Sites and Health Network (ICSHNet) on 6 and 7 February 2017 in Thessaloniki, Greece. The 1st International Training School will follow on 8, 9 and 10 February. Both events will occur at the Research Dissemination Centre (KEDEA) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The Action, registered under the COST Action IS1408, aims to develop a common European framework for research and response on environmental health issues in industrially contaminated sites, and establish a European network of experts and institutions involved in assessing the health impacts and/or managing remediation and response. COST Action IS1408 will clarify needs and priorities, support collection of available information, methods and data, promote shared initiatives and develop guidance and resources on risk assessment, management and communication across Europe. It will also allow a comparative reading and interpretation of existing data on health of citizens who live in contaminated sites, create the conditions for the undertaking of comparable health impact assessments of contaminated sites in Europe and beyond.

The work plan is structured to be flexible enough to permit the inclusion of disciplinary perspectives and activities not foreseen during proposal preparation or at the start of the Action. It is articulated through the following four Working Groups, which will meet on 6 February:

  • WG1 – Environmental and health data;
  • WG2 – Methods and tools for exposure assessment;
  • WG3 – Methods and tools for health risk and health impact assessment;
  • WG4 – Risk management and communication.

With the support of the WGs, there will be a 3-day training module for early-stage researchers on “Environmental health in contaminated sites”.
