The Environmental Engineering Laboratory (EnvΕ-Lab) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.) in cooperation with the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency (A.D.D.M.A.) organised a Stakeholder Engagement Event on 3 November 2016, Athens, within the framework of the EU Horizon 2020-funded programme ICARUS – “Integrated Climate forcing and Air pollution Reduction in Urban Systems”.  The event aimed to inform and involve stakeholders into the project’s implementation strategy towards climate change mitigation and air pollution reduction. The event was hosted at the Europe Direct offices, Athens.

At the event, over 50 outstanding guests, distinguished experts and institutions representatives discussed about integration of the project methodology into local, regional and national action plans, as well as the political framework, towards a sustainable urban development. Experts analyzed the concept of urban resilience (e.g. Resilient Athens), and highlighted the project contribution to the Covenant of Mayors, with aiming at CO2 emissions reduction. In particular, Assist. Prof. Mrs. E. Myrivili highlighted the exceptional synergy and project relevance with the environmental policy of air pollution reduction of the Municipality of Athens, while Assoc. Prof. D. Sarigiannis declared that to achieve the project long term ambitious objectives, it is of high importance that the participatory procedure of the society occur on the onset of the project.

Citizens participation was encouraged towards the research project implementation, with key message “the citizen to become researcher”, in order for the planning of research activities, their implementation and results to provide answers to real problems of the society. Innovative technologies were also projected, allowing for the active participation of the citizens into the research procedure (e.g. portable exposure sensors to chemical pollutants in the form of silicone bracelet) and problems and confrontation models were discussed towards green cities development with clean air and close to zero carbon footprint.
