The 1st Interdisciplinary Conference entitled “The role of scientists to inform and limit the impact on health and the environment from exposure to pesticides”, was held on November 4, 2016 in Crete with a great success.

The conference was held under the auspices of the Hellenic Society of Toxicology, Heraklion Medical Association, Mediterranean Scientific Association of Environmental Protection (MESAEP) and Nutrition Institute of New York College. The Environmental Engineering Laboratory (EnvE-Lab) of the Aristotle University was a co-organizer.

The conference focused on the need to raise awareness about reduction in the use of pesticides on crops, due to the cumulative long-term health effects from exposure to harmful pesticides and increased morbidity in chronic diseases. The event garnered high participation from distinguished experts from academia, medicine, farming, geoscience and policy sectors, as well as public administration and local media. At the event, Dr. Petrakis Dimitrios, pediatric surgeon and member of the Heraklion Medical Association, received the Award of Honorary Membership by the Hellenic Society of Toxicology for his contribution to public awareness about the potential effects of long-term exposure to pesticides and xenobiotics.
